Parish Weekend Away at Sneaton Castle near Whitby
9 - 11 March 2012 An opportunity for worship and discussion, to participate in activities (for both children and adults), to meditate and share fellowship together in beautiful surroundings. St John's last went to Sneaton in November 2007 (see photos here) and this should be an equally enjoyable weekend. The keynote speaker is the new Bishop of Durham, so this may be one of the first opportunities to hear him speak in his new post. The cost is subsidised so we hope no-one will be deterred from coming on financial grounds. For more details and the booking form click here.
Baroness Sherlock of Durham
Maeve Sherlock was introduced in the House of Lords on Monday 5 July. To see the video of the event, click here.
Photo Voltaic Cells on St Johns
The PCC is considering the possibility of installing photo voltaic cells on the roof of St John's. These would both generate electricty for the National Grid, and reduce the running costs of the church. There is a currently a display on the notice boards in the kitchen, and you can download a copy of it here. The PCC is keen to hear your views on the possibility. If you would like to comment, or you have any questions you think the PCC needs to consider before making any decision, please email PVproject@sjnx.org.uk.
Neville’s Cross Community Eco Festival 2011

Drop in and enjoy the many and varied stalls, delicious local food (mutton roast, ploughman’s lunch, homebaking), festival music (African rhythms (12.30 and 2.00pm), classical, acoustic, jazz, brass band, folk), games and childrens’ activities, face-painting, henna art, story telling, interactive drama (1.30pm), Quiet Space, films, swap shop, Speakers’ Corner, beer and hymns (4.00pm), and much more. Sunday 19 June, in and around St John’s Church, from 11.00am to 5.00pm. FREE ENTRY. To see the event poster click here.
SWINE FLU PRECAUTIONS - COMMUNION IN 'ONE KIND'
Following advice from the Government and the Archbishops, for the time being the wine will not be administered at Communion services, at St John's or St Margaret's. This is a sensibly-reasoned precaution to minimise the spread of the virus. Communion "in one kind" is a full and valid form of participation in the sacrament where circumstances require. To see the Archbishops' advice click here. Regardless of this extra prudent precaution, by far the most effective means of reducing the risk of infection is for people who are ill to refrain from attending church services, meetings etc until they are better; and for all of us to observe best practice in hygiene: washing hands frequently, and trapping coughs/sneezes in a tissue (which should be disposed of immediately after use - please do not leave tissues in the pews!)
NEWS FROM CATHERINE LEE, OUR CMS MISSION PARTNER

ADMISSION OF CHILDREN TO COMMUNION
St John's welcomes baptized children to Communion before Confirmation as a sign of their full participation in the life of the church and of human equality in the eyes of God. Before beginning to receive Communion, children are required to take part in a simple course of preparation. Names of new communicants are then recorded by the church and a presentation is made. If your child(ren) is/are interested in receiving Communion, please speak to the Rector and/or note their names down on the sheet at the back of church. The course will take place in May (lasting no more than 4 sessions) and will be arranged to suit the participants. There is no minimum age as such; but parents are asked to gauge - and to discuss with their children - whether they are ready to approach the sacrament with a due sense that this is something special and important and to be treated with respect. |
